Copyright
As soon as you create an original work it becomes protected by a copyright. This means that no one else can alter or use your original work unless you grant them permission.

We will learn more about copyright and what it covers in our Ownership Unit. What is important to know now is that you cannot just use images, music, literary works online or from print and change or edit without getting permission.

Creative Commons
What if you need an image to edit or put into a presenation; how do you do that without breaking the copyright?

In the past you might have just copied an image off of Google and pasted it into your slideshow. However, this is proabably breaking (or infringing on) the copyright - unless the creator grants you permission by using a Creative Commons license. Creative Commons is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping generate a database of original work that you can use as long as you attribute (give credit) to the creator. They have different license types so be sure to read up on which type your media files are.

How to Cite
It's important to cite all of the resourcse and materials you use, that way you give credit to the creator. There are many different formats to cite the materials you use for this class here are two.

APA Format
This is one of many formal ways to cite your sources. I used the website Copyright.gov to gather the information about copyright and what it protects. Here are examples of how to cite a website in APA format using this website and the Creative Commons Website.

Here are two resources that will help you cite in APA Foramt:

Creative Commons Attribution
Creative Commons provides their own way to cite works that have a Creative Commons license. This format is a little more user friendly, but still gives credit to the creator. Make sure to follow the creators wishes for how you use their original work. Here are the example attributions for the images on this webpage.
